Stem Cells and Sickle Cell

Hi I’ve just been reminded that something i’ve been following for several years now is gaining support. I beleive there is a University programme (Georgia – i think) that has done 10 stem cell transplants with people with Sickle cell. From memory 8 had a significant improvement and the remaining 2 no change. Now all of that is from memory so please don’t quote me. The down side is that finding a tissue match is so difficult that it is unlikely to ever become widely available as a treatment – it is also hugely costly. Even if it were to become available the complications to do with anti rejection drugs and hospitalisation just make me shudder – there has to be a better way.

Now my thought was this. We know our own bodies can and do produce stem cells continuously and if we can support that process the possibilities are almost endless. These stem cells have previously been looked at for helping neurological issues like Parkinsons, Dementia and Multipe Sclerosis – thats how they found that they can cross the blood brain barrier into the brain and nervous system.

My question is this: has anyone anywhere done any studies into sickle cell sufferers own stem cells – do they contain the same abnormality?

Sickle Cell and Children

Most people don’t realise that their children might have Sickle Cell Disease until they are a few months old or even a year or two. By this time the effects on the spleen are already beginning to take effect and the spleen may well have so much scar tissue in it that it may cease to function. Prevention is the word – from the earliest days of birth take the best measures to prevent hidden damage. Use the best nutrition you can, plenty of water, supplement with glyconutrients, phytonutrients and foods like beetroot. Take action before the crises become obvious.

How many people suffer with Sickle Cell

In North America there are probably about 80,000 people have sickle cell disease. In the UK there are another 20,000, world-wide there are probably 2 million people who manifest the full symptoms of Sickle Cell. The suffering doesn’t stop there though. For every one with sickle cell there are 3 siblings who carry some aspect of the sickle cell but who don’t manifest the symptoms. This only becomes a problem when thet choose to have a family – then they need to be aware that if their partner also is a carrier of the trait then they have a 1 in 4 risk of any child actually having the full blown symptoms. I’ll put more up on this in a later entry with more detail.

What a Result

We’ve been working with one of our people for 9 months now and she has just gone back to the hospital for her routine review. One of the indicators the check is the haemoglobin levels. This particular lady has had a haemoglobin level of under 9 for years and very often in the low 8.2- 8.5 region. Her actions have in just 9 months increased her haemoglobin level to 9.4 – a massive increase which reflects the health improvements we have seen – to keep it in context a normal person who doesn’t suffer from sickle cell would have a haemoglobin level of 12-14 so there is still a way to go but a positive change is worth shouting about.

How is it that there isn’t a cure for Sickle Cell

Its a question that comes up often and one that really only has one answer. There isn’t enough money in it for the pharmaceuticals and hence they have no incentive. The stigma that goes with sickle cell disease – if you tell a prospective employer you’ll not get the job. If you are in work and declare that you have sickle cell you’ll find that they gradually find reasons why you shouldn’t work for them. Sickle cell is the hidden stigma. As if the pain isn’t enought the innability to get a job is often even worse. The poor health is bad enough on its own but add to that the inability to get any sort of insurance (health, life assurance motgages) and those with sickle cell seem to be condemed to a hidden underclass. Sickle Cell and Bowel Health

Recently i’ve been working with a lady with sickle cell and who has had bouts of what appear to be jaundice. This lead to a discussion yesterday with a lady who emphasised the need to keep the colon clean and for the need for 3 bowel movements a day. When you think about the relevance of that you begin to wonder how many otehr health conditions are related to bowel health or sickness. When we got this lady’s bowel working better the jaundice cleared within a few days. So what did we use – soluable plant fibre, Fructo oligosacharides and magnesium. Oh and don’t forget the importance of water and water is not allways quite what it seems. I’ll post more on that in the next few days.

Sickle Cell and Beetroot

The other day i was talking to a lady in the USA who works with Sickle Cell and we were discussing what worked and the importance of getting duplicatable or reproducible results. Let me explain here that we are at the very beginning of a process that will aid hundreds of thousands of people with sickle cell diesease but we have to take things slowly and understand what works and why. Otherwise we come up witha situation that doesn’t respond as we expect and both the perosn and the helper run the risk of getting dissapointed.

I have one very simple rule. If I make a change in one area – say use filter water instead of tap water and do that for a week and see what the result is. Only when the result is clear do we then move on and make another change.

Sickle cell is a complex disease and one that deserves careful handling as the pain and consequences are significant.

We have however found that adding glyconutrients in the form of a complex powder of plant extracts that provides the body with the ability to make the 8 or so biologically actrive sugars that are the key to cellular communication incredibly safe and very helpful. So what is it with beetroot – beetroot was suggested to me by a mum whose son with Sickle Cel used it and wanted to know if i thought it a good idea. To be honest i thought she was a bit crazy and the son a bit of a saint to drink beetroot juice. Anyway after a bit of resaecrh it transpired that beetroot juice is a good source of a compound known to aid the formation of haemoglobin – very helpful to sickle cell sufferers. That then started me on another train of thought – where can we get the active ingredient in more concentrated form – that lead me to apricot kernels and possibly apricot oil (didn’t even know that existed). We are now trying that out on a willing adult volunteer but very slowly – remember my principle rule – make changes one at a time and do it slowly.

I made the mistake one day of asking someone with Sickle Cell what the pain was like. The answer i got still sends shivers down my spine – it feels like 10000 red hot razorblades cutting my flesh. It feels like the muscles are being torn apart and there is no let up. We ahve found that there are several simple things that you can do, some of them at no cost, which will reduce the pain without drugs and often remove the need for strong painkillers.
